Everything You Need to Know About Botswana’s Driving Licence Renewal Process
In Botswana, driving licences are valid for five years, after which they must be renewed. Drivers are encouraged to renew their licences up to three months before the expiry date to avoid any penalties. Failing to renew the licence on time could result in a fine.
Who Can Renew Their Licence?
The renewal process applies to all holders of a valid Botswana driving licence.
How Do I Renew My Licence?
To begin the renewal process, download and complete the DL 1 – Botswana Driving Licence Application form. This form is also available at the Enquiries Desk in any of the Department of Road Transport and Safety offices.
If you are 65 years or older, or applying for a class C, C1, EC, or EC1 licence, you will also need to complete a Health Declaration form (DL31).
Next, proceed to the eye screening office for an eye examination. Applicants with vision challenges may be referred to an external eye specialist for further evaluation. If the specialist approves, you can return to the Registration and Licensing Officer with the necessary results and recommendations.
After submitting your completed documents, you will need to pay the required fee, have your photograph taken, and receive your newly issued driving licence card.
What Documents Do I Need?
When applying for a licence renewal, be sure to bring the following documents:
- Certified copy of your valid National Identity Card (Omang)
- Certified copy of your Passport
- Certified copy of your Exemption Certificate or Residence and Work Permit (if applicable)
- Refugee Identification Card (for refugees)
How Long Will the Process Take?
The renewal process is quick and typically completed immediately.
What Are the Costs?
The renewal fee is P91.00. If you miss the expiry date, you will incur a daily penalty of P9.00 (excluding weekends and public holidays), which can accumulate up to a maximum of P1,000.00.
Where Can I Renew My Licence?
You can complete the renewal process at any Department of Road Transport and Safety office across Botswana. Offices are open from 07:30 to 16:30, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.
